The Best First Teaching Job

by Teacher - 01/23/2007

"After going through the process of getting an education and student teaching, landing your first real teaching job can seem like an extremely daunting task. The market for teachers seems to change at a moment’s notice and the pay you can expect as"

a first-year teacher may not even be enough to cover the loan payments you have to take out. However, you’re looking for a teaching job because you love teaching, so your first goal should be to get into the best situation possible to play to your strengths.

Often, teachers fresh out of school nab the first teaching job they can find, applying for everything in sight and scouring the area for additional opportunities. While this is certainly sometimes necessary in a particularly tough market for teachers, it also puts teachers into teaching jobs they don’t want, aren’t prepared for or don’t have a passion for. This can lead to a poor job performance, unhappiness and even a turn away from teaching as a profession all together.

As you go out into the workplace for the first time, scouring every possible source for a teaching job, keep in mind that while it can take some time to find, the right position is out there somewhere for you that will maximize your talent and fulfill your desires for your teaching career. This may not be apparent right off the bat, but persistence in your teaching job search will take you a long way.

That is certainly not to say that there won’t be some compromise along the way. If your heart is set on second grade and you get a great offer for first grade, there is room for compromise. If you have your heart set on landing a teaching job as a high school English teacher, a job offer for a kindergarten teacher is definitely not the time to compromise. Always keep your ultimate teaching goals in mind as you look for your first teaching job and balance your eagerness to get started with the patience you need to pick out the right situation for you.
