difficult decision of deciding what kind of teacher they want to be very early on. This can lead to some tough questions about what to specialize in, what age to focus on and what level to shoot for. Teaching kindergarten can be a great choice for many prospective teachers, but those that are mulling it over should see if they can commit to the constant interaction with very young children.
Learning about things like literature and advanced science as part of a general course requirement in college can tilt prospective teachers towards using that advanced knowledge on students of an age predisposed to handle that kind of advanced thinking. Obviously, kindergarten is not one of those ages, yet teaching kindergarten is a thriving profession filled with able young teachers. How so?
Picking kindergarten or picking the lower grades of elementary school as a focus entails choosing the people involved rather than the subjects involved. While the prospect of teaching kindergarten can include simple concepts like colors and shapes, it is more about teaching a young child how to interact with others, how to learn and how to begin to understand the world around them. This is a far cry from teaching high school student that should (although arguable they don’t always) understand these kinds of concepts.
As you determine whether teaching kindergarten is something you’d like to do, don’t evaluate the subjects or concepts you might teach. Instead, evaluate yourself and your readiness to deal with young children. It can be frustrating at times, but for those with a love for teaching young children, teaching kindergarten can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling career path.
