Teaching Through Your Early Years

by Teacher - 01/23/2007

"Those that have come to this site fresh off of a student teaching assignment can certainly empathize with those that are in any walk of life at the bottom rung, performing tasks under an advisor to gain valuable work skills."

Those now in full-time teaching positions probably have some memories, good or bad, about how the student teaching job process eventually shaped their teaching philosophy.

What cannot be argued by either group is how profound an influence early experiences can have through student teaching on a subsequent career. While that is certainly something to keep in mind for those going through their student teaching job experiences now, it is even more important to keep in mind for those teachers with student teaching guests in their classroom as they become mentors, whether they mean to or not.

If you do have a student teacher in your room, go out of your way to convey some of the broad concepts you have learned through your teaching career that provide ways to connect with children of any age. Student teaching jobs should not only be about getting the feet wet, but getting the mind saturated as well by an experienced teacher with at least a few years of tips and tricks under his or her belt.

It is also important to let a student teacher know that over the course of a student teaching job, they should be open to learning from the students as well. As a first exposure to students, student teaching can sometimes simply be managed or struggled through by those thrust in front of students for the first time. Don’t let this happen. Help your student teacher explore the things that they’ve spent time learning in school and then take the more important step of processing how students react. Teaching that feedback loop early on will ultimately benefit those tasked with the difficult but entirely necessary prospect of student teaching jobs.
